Background

The American India Foundation (AIF) is a leadinginternational development organization charged with the mission of acceleratingsocial and economic change in India.By mobilizing people and resources across the United States, AIF has raised over$50 million since its inception in 2001.

 

AIF’s initiatives center on Education, Livelihood, andPublic Health projects in Indiawith emphasis on elementary education, women’s empowerment and HIV/AIDS. AIFworks out of New Yorkand Silicon Valley in the US, and New Delhi and Bangalore in India.Ex-President of USA,Bill Clinton serves as Honorary Chair.

 

American India Foundation is looking totake on board a senior seasoned individual, as the current India CountryDirector has expressed a wish to move on to explore other avenues for careergrowth. The new Country Directorwill therefore have full management and funding responsibility for AIF in India.

 

AIF is seeking to appoint an individualwho has a combination of general management experience, strong businessdevelopment skills and a network amongst Indian business people and government,international exposure (not necessarily experience), and experience of workingin professional environments. The incumbent will be expected to have experienceand active working knowledge of India’sdevelopment sector with an interest in developing high impact interventionstrategies in the area of education, livelihood and public health.

 

Responsibilities

The AIF India Country Director would play a leadershiprole in shaping the thinking, approach and strategies relating to allprogrammatic aspects of AIF’s work and would be independently responsible forthe effectiveness and integrity of all activities undertaken by AIF in India. Theincumbent will be expected to leverage the intellectual leadership from the US into theon-ground Indiaprogrammes, to enable AIF in Indiato establish a distinctive edge. Specific responsibilities

are outlined below:

 

·        Programme related: Providing strategic direction to thedevelopment and implementation of

AIF’s programmes in India and forge alliances andintellectual exchange between Indiaand US. Lead the development of guidelines, processesand procedures to be followed internally by AIF in Indiathat ensures that AIF’s resources are effectively deployed and the desiredoutcomes achieved. Develop parameters/indicators for measurement of programmeoutputs.

·        Human Resources Development: Determine AIF India’s organizationstructure and develop policies & programmes to ensure training, motivation& retention of human resources.

·        Finance and Administration related: Ensure financial integrity of all fundsraised (both from US and within India),by ensuring appropriate systems of account maintenance, due diligence andchecks and balances.

·        Public Relations: Build the reputation and “brand’ of AIFand its work with all external stakeholders in India – governments, NGOpartners, board and council members, well-wishers and supporters, other fundingagencies, suppliers and, most importantly, communities AIF serves.

 

Experience

·        Professionalexperience of 12+ years(preferably 16-20) post qualification, of which at least 6 years in a generalmanagement role in a reputed corporate, institution, or not-for-profitorganisation, where s/he has been responsible for strategizing social issueintervention, organization building, human resource development & financialmanagement functions.

·        Understandingof nuances of the development/NGO sector.

·        Understandingof the ‘principles of partnership’ with multiple stakeholders i.e. NGO sector,government sector, private partners.

·        Entrepreneurialand innovative in approach to the management of objectives.

·        Believein catalyzing social change, building sustainable communities and create ameasurable impact.

·        Overseas/internationalexperience would be a desirable asset.

 

 

 

 

The position reports to the Chief Executive Officer of American IndiaFoundation in New York.Compensation will be commensurate with experience.
