ORGANIZATION: Institute of Financial Management and Research Trust
The main objective of the IFMR Trust is to build an incubation platform for livelihood enterprises. large proportion of the Indian population does not have access to even basic facilities such as health care, education and financial services leave alone the access to main-stream markets. The failure can be ascribed to the inability of markets to respond to certain demands in the absence of facilitative infrastructure and to the under performance of many public systems. But at the same time, India’s poor are engaged in a lot of productive activity. Investing in these livelihoods has a strong potential for social and economic impact. This calls for a dynamic institutional build-up, which bridges the gap between the poor (as both producers and consumers) and the market. The process of wealth creation is severely constrained in the absence of a complimentary social (like health and education) and physical (like electricity, water and roads) infrastructure.
The way forward is to create a network of enterprises, which will give the poor a platform to engage with the markets as producers and consumers of goods and services. Such a network of enterprises will act as an intermediary between the formal markets and the poor to demonstrate and implement market-based solutions. It is envisaged that all the enterprises and other such initiatives that come up in future are brought under a single holding structure of the IFMR trust. This structure will provide a common direction to the work of these entities, ensure proper coordination and synergies between them and provide specialized skills like HR, IT, Technical and financial advisory services. The structures will include both for-profit and not for profit enterprises, which will be subsidiaries to the Trust. Such a structure will help the individual in leveraging their scarce resources, benefit from the economies of scale, share the resources (technical, financial and also brand equity) and thereby significantly reduce their costs. Each enterprise will complement the work of the other and yet specialise in what it can do best. Some of these initiatives are already off the ground and are working in tandem with each other.
